Sevier County Commission adopts FY 2025–26 budget, holds tax rate at $1.48

Sevier County commissioners on June 30, 2025 approved a package of budget resolutions that amend fiscal-year 2024–25 accounts and adopt the official budget and appropriations for fiscal year 2025–26, and they established the certified tax rate at $1.48 — unchanged from the current rate.
Chairman Larry Waters said the budget items were vetted by the education, transportation and budget committees. In accordance with Tennessee Code Annotated § 5-5-112(b)(2), Chairman Waters instructed that commissioners employed by the county announce their employer and voting interest for the record for agenda items 17 through 23. Several commissioners made those disclosures on the record, including Rick Valentine (Director, Sevier County Ambulance Service), Warren Hurst (part-time County Planning Office), Don McGill (Sevier County Solid Waste), Greg Haggard (Sevier County School Board employee) and Tommy Watts (officer, Sevier County Sheriff’s Office).
The commission approved amendments and appropriations covering a range of funds — general fund, fire protection, law library, solid waste/sanitation, special purpose, highway, school general purpose, federal projects, cafeteria, debt service and public utility funds — by roll-call votes recorded as 21 Yes, 0 No, 4 Absent for the set of budget items. The motion to set the certified tax rate at $1.48 was presented by the budget committee and approved by roll call.
Commissioner Bryan Delius thanked the mayor’s office and staff for compiling the budget; Chairman Waters echoed that thanks and credited committee members and departmental staff for their work. The commission also approved appropriations to various nonprofit organizations serving county residents as part of the FY 2025–26 budget.
The resolution package passed; the commission noted that procedural conflict disclosures were entered into the record as required by state law. Next scheduled commission meeting was announced as August 18, 2025.
