Chairman Larry Waters described Smelcer’s long tenure and infrastructure work, and told the board that Smelcer’s assistant, Donnie Adams, will step into the role while the commission follows the statutory appointment process. The minutes state the commission has 120 days to fill the vacancy and that candidates must be certified by the state committee before they are eligible to run in next year’s election cycle.
Several commissioners spoke in tribute to Smelcer’s long service; the board approved the resignation acceptance by roll call vote (23 Yes, 0 No, 2 Absent). The minutes record the commission will solicit names and certify candidates in advance of any appointment as required by state procedures.
