Sevier County approves purchase of former National Guard armory parcel to transfer to Sevier Solid Waste, Inc.

Sevier County commissioners voted unanimously May 19 to approve purchase of a 10.75-acre former National Guard armory parcel on Newar Ridge Road and to transfer the property to Sevier Solid Waste, Inc.
Assistant Mayor Matt Rudder told the board the state is disposing armory properties across Tennessee and staff negotiated the county's purchase terms with the Department of Military. The stateappraiser initially valued the property at $1,930,000; county staff referenced earlier county and city investments and successfully negotiated reductions that brought the state charge to about $1.6 million after a further $355,000 reduction, Rudder said. Sevier Solid Waste, Inc. will provide the purchase funds, the mayor's office said.
Rudder described the planned ownership sequence: the Department of Military will quick-claim the deed to the county and city, and then the county and city will quick-claim the property to Sevier Solid Waste, Inc. The county intends to use the armorysite to support transfer-station operations adjacent to the existing compost facility, Executive Director Tom Leonard told the commission.
Commissioner D. Weaver moved to approve Resolution 2025-05-08; Michael Maddron seconded. The motion passed by roll call vote 23 Yes, 0 No, 2 Absent.
The county did not provide a finalized purchase contract during the meeting; the mayor's office and Sevier Solid Waste, Inc. will complete required deeds and closing steps before transfer of ownership.
