Sevier County adopts Safe Streets and Roads for All plan to pursue transportation grants

Sevier County commissioners on Nov. 17 adopted a countywide Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) plan intended to guide road-safety projects and unlock grant opportunities.
Jeff Mize of CDM Smith presented the study’s findings and identified recommended improvements and options for implementation. The board voted unanimously (24 Yes, 0 No, 1 Absent) to adopt the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, which county officials said will help secure state and federal grant funding and inform prioritization with Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and local highway departments.
Chairman (Mayor) Larry Waters said the county’s transportation board, TDOT, local highway departments and law enforcement will develop a priority list of the plan’s findings. County staff noted some recommended projects will require significant funding and intergovernmental coordination.
Why it matters: Adopting an SS4A plan is typically a prerequisite for applying to competitive federal discretionary funds for safety projects. For Sevier County, formal adoption signals intent to seek grants and coordinate across municipal and state partners.
What’s next: Staff and partner agencies will work on a prioritized list and pursue grant opportunities; timelines and specific projects were not finalized at the meeting.
