County mayor outlines plan for $745,688 in state COVID recovery funds

"Each county will receive $500,000.00 with additional money based on population," County Mayor Joe Brooks said while presenting the program and possible uses. He said the funding is one-time only and must be used for one-time expenses. He listed potential uses including school needs, helipads for remote areas, volunteer fire department equipment and water projects.
Brooks said the county should receive a formal direct-appropriation letter from the state no later than July 31 and asked commissioners to prepare and submit a plan for how the county will spend its allocation. He said he would provide commissioners with information to guide those plans.
The commission did not take formal action on the appropriation during the meeting; Brooks’s presentation was intended to start planning and solicit commissioners’ input on priorities. The mayor stressed the funds are separate from recurring operating revenue and should be reserved for one-time capital or infrastructure needs.
Next steps: Mayor Brooks will distribute details and proposed project guidance to commissioners for review ahead of future meetings where the commission may adopt a formal spending plan.
