Residents challenge Health and Safety Standards Board codes; commission returns a resolution for reevaluation

Several residents used the public-comment period at the Jan. 21 Cumberland County Commission meeting to register objections to recent Health and Safety Standards Board (HSSB) code changes and to the county's newly appointed codes officer.
Howard Burnett of 553 Gardens Drive urged attention to state sovereignty in his remarks. Additional commenters — Tyler Sisco (310 Byers Road), Calvin Bruce (1020 Grapevine Road) and Jonathan Miller (7223 Old Pomona Road) — focused on new property rules and enforcement under the HSSB codes and expressed concern about how the new codes officer will apply those rules.
In old business, Commissioner Jerry Cooper moved and Commissioner Jack Davis seconded a motion to return Resolution 11-2024-4 to the Health and Safety Standards Board for reevaluation and proposed changes. The motion passed by unanimous roll call vote.
County Attorney Philip Burnett later reported that the HSSB case was scheduled for Jan. 28, 2025 at 1:30 p.m.; he said details could be discussed as requested. The meeting minutes also record that a new EEOC case had been filed but that no details were available at the time.
