Commissioner Sherry McCreary moved to approve the grant application and to use the surplus to support the county's COVID feeding program; Commissioner David Mundy seconded. The roll-call vote was 19 in favor and 2 opposed (Commissioners Zach Mullins and Anthony Rowe voted against).
The resolution (Res. 2020-038) lists three projects: replacement of seven pipes near the end of Gap Creek Road—including raising the road and installing two 18-by-7-foot concrete box culverts (approximate cost $400,000); raising the intersection of Gap Creek Road and Yellow Branch Road and placing two 60-inch pipes (approximate cost $140,000); and raising the existing road between those areas that floods (approximate cost $180,000). The resolution states the total cost is approximately $720,000 and that the grant requires no local match.
The commission also approved designating $26,261 of the grant surplus to the county's COVID-19 feeding program through Hunger Ministries of Claiborne County. The resolution states the grant award authorized for Claiborne County is $746,261.
