Commission approves contested appointments to E911 board after 13-8 roll call

Commissioner Zach Mullins moved to approve the appointments; Commissioner Nathan Epperson seconded. The resolution (Res. 2020-035) names Jeremy Myers, Tazewell chief of police; Ben Evans, New Tazewell chief of police; and Jerry Beeler, New Tazewell mayor, for four-year terms. The resolution replaces positions held by Andy Duncan, Sam McCollough and Barry Thomas.
The roll-call tally recorded 13 votes for and 8 against. Commissioners voting for the appointments included Brent Clark, Whitt Shuford, Charlton Vass, Nathan Epperson, Kim Large, Mike Campbell, Stacey Crawford, Nicholas Epperson, Zach Mullins, Anthony Rowe, Mitchell Cosby, Steve Brogan and Steve Murphy. Commissioners opposed were Juanita Honeycutt, Rosemary Barnett, Carolyn Brooks, Steve Mason, Sherry McCreary, Shawn Peters, David Mundy and James Hatmaker.
The resolution cites Tennessee Code Annotated authority for emergency communications districts and states the appointments are intended to maintain representation across jurisdictions that use and fund E911 service. The commission did not take further amendment to change the number or structure of seats.
The E911-appointments vote followed action on other agenda items, including library board appointments and a motion that tabled a separate budget item.
