Carter County emergency manager: debris sites closed, county seeks $50 million in state recovery funding

Gary Smith provided the county’s disaster recovery update at the May 1 special session, saying temporary debris sites have been closed and that support documentation is being uploaded to the FEMA portal as the county prepares reimbursement requests. He told commissioners that some site inspections are complete and others are scheduled, and that the finance director is coordinating with insurance adjusters.
Smith said the county is awaiting a final contract with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and is preparing mitigation-grant applications. He told the board the county has requested funding under Governor Lee’s new Response and Recovery fund and is applying for $50,000,000 to help cover response and recovery costs. Smith also reported that waterway debris removal has made good progress and that paving work is underway in Hampton.
The update did not include formal votes; commissioners moved on to consider budget-committee recommendations and invoice approvals tied to the recovery effort. County staff indicated that landfill invoices are being reviewed and should be submitted before the next commission meeting.
