County officials told commissioners on Oct. 20 that the countywide communications upgrade is progressing toward installation and testing.
Mayor Patty Woodby asked Communications Project lead Mark Ridings to update the commission. Ridings introduced John Morgan, the new Motorola project manager. Morgan said radio equipment has been manufactured and staged at a facility in Manchester, Tennessee; microwave components are being assembled and will follow a similar staging process. Geo studies are under way at Buffalo and Avery locations.
Morgan said the equipment is expected to arrive in Manchester in late December and that the team is "in a good position to complete by the end of 2026." The county has issued an awards letter to an AE firm and will proceed through an RFP process to select a contractor once procurement steps are complete.
No formal vote was recorded on the communications project during the meeting. County staff said they will follow procurement steps and return with contract recommendations as required.
