The Industrial Development Authority of Tazewell County handled a slate of consent and action items on Sept. 10, approving minutes, financial statements and several vendor invoices, and authorizing staff to seek an extension on a TROF grant for Project Jonah.
Consent and invoice approvals included: - Approval of the Aug. 13, 2025 minutes (motion Mrs. Melanie Protti-Lawrence; second Mr. Curtis Breeding) adopted 6-0. - Approval of August 2025 General and Grant account bank statements (motion Mrs. Melanie Protti-Lawrence; second Mr. Curtis Breeding) adopted 6-0. - Magnolia River: approved a $20,000 invoice for 90% completion of a natural gas extension design; the work is 100% grant funded (motion Mr. Tim Danielson; second Mrs. Melanie Protti-Lawrence) adopted 6-0. - Project Ponderosa: ratified an Aug. 25 poll vote approving a contract with Appalachian Surveying, Inc. not to exceed $2,000 (motion Mr. Curtis Breeding; second Mr. Mack Payne) adopted 6-0, and later approved an Appalachian Surveying invoice for $1,350 (motion Mr. Curtis Breeding; second Mrs. Melanie Protti-Lawrence) adopted 6-0. - Gillespie Electric: approved establishing a new 100-amp power service at Raven (for Family Insight) and an invoice not to exceed $500 (motion Mr. Curtis Breeding; second Mrs. Melanie Protti-Lawrence) adopted 6-0.
Executive session and post-session action: The Authority entered executive session under Virginia Code §2.2-3711 to discuss multiple prospective business projects and the award/terms of a public contract. After returning to open session, the board adopted the executive-session certification. The board authorized staff to request an extension on the TROF grant for Project Jonah with the Tobacco Commission if necessary (motion Mr. Darrell Addison; second Mrs. Melanie Protti-Lawrence). That motion was adopted 5-0, with Mr. Rick Chitwood recorded as abstaining.
Staff and attendees noted additional project activity: Economic Development Director Tim Danielson reported the department is tracking 14 active projects with approximately $2.3 billion in potential capital investment; he said a separate $2 billion project will visit nearby property and could require external water arrangements and is expected to bring about 190 net new jobs with an estimated $6.6 million annual payroll. No formal action on that project was taken at this meeting.
