Town of Tazewell says farmers market pavilion bid chosen; asks IDA about potential cannery partnership

Representatives of the Town of Tazewell updated the Industrial Development Authority on the town’s farmers market pavilion and asked about a possible cannery partnership during the Oct. 8 meeting.
Ms. Tammy Smith, appearing on behalf of the Town of Tazewell I/EDA, said the town received three bids for the farmers market pavilion and the lowest bidder was Heritage Metal of Richlands. Smith said the town will make an announcement about the pavilion on Oct. 16, and that construction is scheduled to start in February with an expected 90-day completion window; the town plans paving work in spring.
Smith also reported the Town of Tazewell I/EDA owns a building the town is seeking funding to occupy and asked whether IDA members remain interested in partnering on a potential cannery. Tim Danielson said an operator would need to be selected to run any cannery, and Ms. Cara Spivey, chairman of the Town of Tazewell I/EDA (participating by phone), said both town and county would need to work together to find an operator.
What’s next: the town will announce the pavilion award on Oct. 16; county staff and town representatives will continue discussions about funding and potential operators for a cannery.
