Summary
The Industrial Development Authority of Tazewell County on Jan. 14 approved routine financial items, accepted a $40,000 VCEDA grant to fund a Preliminary Engineering Report and environmental study for a Maple Wood Lane housing site, and authorized up to $7,000 in Phase I site-assessment quotes from the grant proceeds.
The Industrial Development Authority of Tazewell County voted Jan. 14 to approve its January invoice summary, authorize acceptance of a $40,000 grant from the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority (VCEDA) for a Preliminary Engineering Report and environmental study and to solicit Phase I Environmental Site Assessment quotes for the Maple Wood Lane property.
Chairman Kyle Hurt presided over the meeting at the Tazewell County Administration Office. On a motion by IDA member Mack Payne, seconded by Rick Chitwood, the board unanimously approved the Dec. 18, 2025 minutes and then approved the January invoice summary after Economic Development Manager Ashley Harris noted an adjusted Lighthouse Engineering invoice for Project Ponderosa. Mrs. Melanie Protti-Lawrence asked for additional detail on a larger-than-usual rent entry listed for the CFB Health Department and a partial rent payment; Harris said the $82,500 figure included a $22,500 Health Department rent and a $60,000 partial payment on a loan from the Board of Supervisors.
Economic Development Director Tim Danielson told the IDA the department is tracking 13 active projects with roughly $3.1 billion in potential capital investment, an estimated 475 net new jobs and about $27.5 million in annual payroll as of January 2026. Danielson reported the VCEDA award of $40,000 for an engineering and environmental study for land on the north side of Maple Wood Lane, between the Tazewell County Career and Technical Center and an existing housing development on Maple Wood Lane. "The Authority hereby authorizes to accept and execute the grant agreement by and between VCEDA and the Tazewell County IDA for housing development soft costs up to $40,000," the board recorded when it approved the grant on a motion by Rick Chitwood, seconded by Darell Cantrell.
The board also authorized Danielson and the Economic Development Department to solicit three or more quotes for a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment for the site, not to exceed $7,000 of the VCEDA grant proceeds; that motion was adopted unanimously. The motions approving financial items and the grant were recorded as adopted by votes of 6 to 0.
The board approved bank statements for the December 2025 General and Grant accounts on a motion by Rick Chitwood, seconded by Melanie Protti-Lawrence. Chairman Hurt noted visitors were present who would appear in executive session; no substantive public comments are recorded in the minutes.
The IDA set its next regular meeting for Feb. 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
