Tazewell planning commission approves Dollar General erosion plan, renews junkyard permit

The Tazewell County Planning Commission unanimously approved an erosion and sediment (E & S) plan for a new Dollar General on Route 460 in Maxwell and renewed an existing junkyard permit at its Dec. 14, 2023 regular meeting.
Jim Ribble of Alpha Land Surveyors presented the Dollar General E & S plan. Kenneth Dunford Jr., director of county engineering, said he reviewed the submission and recommended approval contingent on payment of a bond of $12,150 and the required permit fee; County Attorney Chase Collins echoed that recommendation. Vice-Chairman Robert "Bob" Moss moved to approve the plan and Member Anthony Ramella seconded; the motion carried 7-0.
Dunford also reported that Dandee's Auto Salvage had paid the $550 renewal fee for its existing junkyard and salvage permit and recommended its continuation. Member Jason Herndon moved to renew the permit; Member Maggie Asbury seconded and the commission approved the renewal by a 7-0 vote.
The commission also approved its meeting agenda with the late addition of a joint public meeting item and approved the Nov. 14, 2023 meeting minutes by voice votes of 7-0. No members recorded dissents on the recorded items.
Next steps: the Dollar General approval is contingent on the bond and fee being paid before permits are issued, per the county engineering recommendation. The commission adjourned at approximately 7:50 p.m. and will meet next on Jan. 11, 2024 at 6:30 p.m.
