Tazewell planning commission approves agenda and minutes, unanimously recommends Comprehensive Plan to supervisors

At its Feb. 8 meeting the Planning Commission approved the meeting agenda and prior minutes and voted 7–0 to recommend the county Comprehensive Plan to the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors; commissioners also discussed several agenda items including a petition on Wandering Trail and a new state erosion-and-sediment model ordinance.
The Tazewell County Planning Commission met Feb. 8, 2024, approved its meeting agenda and previous minutes, and voted unanimously to forward the county Comprehensive Plan to the Board of Supervisors.
Chairperson Ann Robinson called the meeting to order at about 6:33 p.m. Member Hayden Lyons moved to approve the agenda; Member Anthony Ramella seconded, and the motion carried 7–0. Vice-Chair Robert "Bob" Moss moved to approve the Jan. 11, 2024 reorganizational meeting minutes; Member Hayden Lyons seconded and the motion passed 7–0. Member Jason Herndon moved and Member Kyle Cruey seconded approval of the Jan. 23, 2024 special called meeting minutes, with corrections for spelling; that motion also passed 7–0.
County Attorney Chase Collins told commissioners that a standalone public hearing is required for the Comprehensive Plan and said he hoped the Board of Supervisors would put the hearing on its March docket. Following that discussion, Member Jason Herndon moved that the Planning Commission recommend the Comprehensive Plan to the Board of Supervisors; Member Kyle Cruey seconded, and the commission approved the recommendation by a 7–0 vote.
No members of the public addressed the commission during the meeting’s citizen-comment period. Chairperson Robinson raised a separate member concern about roadside trash along U.S. 460; Member Cruey noted the county was planning a trash pickup day and County Attorney Collins said the Board of Supervisors might be involved in addressing the issue.
The commission’s next procedural step is for the Board of Supervisors to schedule the required public hearing on the Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Commission will reconvene on a future date to consider recommendations from the Road Committee and any public-comment input.
