CPMT hears that Minnick Private Day School will bill for 180 days; county clarifies attendance and truancy handling

At a Feb. 24 CPMT meeting, county staff reported outcomes of a Feb. 18 virtual meeting with Encircle/Minnick Private Day School and Tazewell County Schools about student attendance and billing for students placed at Minnick.
The CSA coordinator told CPMT members that Minnick will bill for 180 instructional days and follows the Minnick School calendar rather than the Tazewell County Schools calendar. Minnick provides makeup packets when students are absent; if parents ensure packets are completed and turned in, the day is treated as a virtual learning day and students are not marked absent.
Tazewell County School officials, including Truancy Supervisor Chad Brown and Director of Special Services Melinda Smith, described the county’s process for responding to excessive absences and noted that county schools will not send children to school during inclement weather for safety reasons. The coordinator said Minnick notifies the county when students have excessive absences.
Why this matters: billing practices and differing academic calendars can affect attendance records, truancy procedures and funding flows for students served through CSA placements. CPMT members were informed and directed coordinators and school liaisons to continue communication and follow-up as needed.
The discussion included Minnick representatives Tracy Gibson and Melissa Barley and local school staff. CPMT packet materials also included the Office of Children's Services March 2025 Training Calendar for member awareness.
