Lunenburg County hears proposal for airport community solar lease as solar ordinance remains under review

LUNENBURG, Va. — A developer has approached Lunenburg County about leasing roughly 20 acres at the southern end of the airport near Runway 02 for a community-shared solar project, County Administrator Tracy M. Gee told the Board of Supervisors on June 12.
Gee said the parcel in question (Tax Map #046‑02‑0‑2, PRN 4871) is co‑owned by Lunenburg County and the towns of Kenbridge and Victoria; state law requires the disposition of publicly held property be advertised and that each governing body hold a public hearing before a lease or sale may be approved. Gee said she will prepare a combined advertisement to cover all three public hearings and will draft an RFP to solicit developer proposals for a lease.
The board also heard from two members of the public who spoke in favor of the economic benefits of solar development during the citizen comment period. County Attorney Frank Rennie told the board the county’s proposed Solar Facilities Ordinance remains under review and will require another public hearing before it could be adopted.
Administrator Gee said she would coordinate with Kenbridge and Victoria on advertisement and RFP timing; no lease or zoning decision was made at the meeting. The county will present the disposition advertisement and the RFP process for board consideration at a future meeting.
