Lunenburg board awards sealcoating contract, accepts grant award, confirms appointments and budget transfers

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on July 10 accepted a local contractor’s bid for courthouse sealcoating, approved routine budget transfers from vacancy savings, authorized a county signature on a regional services agreement, and confirmed several appointments.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee told the board the Sheriff's Office had been awarded a FY2026 Byrne/JAG equipment grant of $64,539 that requires a local match of $16,135; Major DJ Penland is reviewing the budget to identify the local funding source and Gee said she will update the board once the source is determined. "Those funds may come from E-summons fee income," Gee said.
The board accepted Warner's Seal Coating's bid of $49,000 for sealcoating the courthouse complex after the Finance Committee evaluated bidders for experience and recent local work; County Attorney Frank Rennie said he concurred with the recommendation. The board unanimously authorized transfers totaling $10,704.41 in vacancy-savings to cover postage, office supplies, computer upgrades for the Treasurer's Office, and vehicle equipment for the Sheriff's Office.
Mrs. Jessica Nowlin presented the monthly school report, noting roughly 20 new teachers and 20 new staff for the 2025–26 school year, convocation scheduled Aug. 1 and students returning Aug. 7. The board agreed to sign the Crossroads Community Services Board Annual Performance Agreement and confirmed appointment actions: Sonya R. Blackwell to the Industrial Development Authority (District 6, term expiring Dec. 31, 2026), John Farrow Sr. to the Airport Commission (District 4), and County Planner Jonathan Chumney as Zoning Administrator effective June 1, 2025.
The board also scheduled a public hearing for the Solid Waste Management Plan at its August meeting.
