Lunenburg County approves major amendment to Solid Waste Management Plan linked to landfill expansion

Lunenburg County supervisors unanimously adopted a major amendment to the county’s Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) at their Aug. 14 meeting to account for an increase in daily tonnage and an approved expansion of the county landfill.
County Administrator Tracy M. Gee said the SWMP must be updated every five years and that updates in 2024 were followed by additional amendments now required by increased tonnage and the approved facility expansion. She said the Department of Environmental Quality permit and an expansion application filed by Meridian Waste are reflected in the updated plan. Representatives Joe Gustaf and Mary O'Brien spoke on Meridian Waste’s behalf about the landfill matters.
Supervisor Frank W. Bacon moved to approve the plan and Supervisor Robert Zava seconded; the motion passed unanimously and the board adopted a resolution supporting implementation and stakeholder collaboration to achieve plan goals.
The resolution in the minutes endorses continued consultation among local units and stakeholders and states the plan aligns with state and federal guidelines; the minutes do not include the DEQ permit number or the specific tonnage changes.
