Lunenburg board backs pursuit of Bioeconomy Development Opportunity zone designation

At the Oct. 9 meeting, County Planner Jonathan Chumney briefed the board about a Rural Resilience Advisors proposal to pursue Bioeconomy Development Opportunity (BDO) Zone and Ratings designation intended to aid economic development in biomass production and related supply chains. Chumney said the designation would strengthen attraction efforts for existing and prospective businesses but would require grant funding; he asked the board to authorize participation in the joint-locality grant application.
The board unanimously approved seeking the grant funds and participating in the joint effort. Chumney noted that if grant support is not secured the region would likely forego the designation because of cost.
Why it matters: The designation could help attract bioeconomy-related investment and provide a planning/marketing advantage for regional biomass companies, with no county match required if the grant is awarded.
