Supervisor urges boundary adjustment to add Waiteville (W.Va.) territory to Craig County; board approves pursuing discussions

Supervisor Jordan Labiosa told the Craig County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 2 that the Waiteville community in neighboring Monroe County, West Virginia, receives county services including EMS, fire and school transportation and that residents and local legislators have signaled openness to a boundary adjustment.

Labiosa presented maps and a brief history of cross-border service provision and asked the board to support pursuing a formal line adjustment along the ridge of Peters Mountain. County Administrator Dan Collins recommended the planning commission prepare a draft line. Labiosa requested staff send a letter to Monroe County before December if Monroe County and the relevant state and federal legislators indicate interest.

The board voted to pursue the adjustment (motion moved by Keith Dunbar, seconded by Carl Bailey) with the roll-call vote recorded as yes from Labiosa, Matyas, Dunbar, Bailey and Spence.

The proposal would require agreement from Monroe County (W.Va.), support from legislators in both states and likely federal approval; the board’s vote authorizes the county to open the conversation and begin local mapping and outreach rather than to effect a boundary change immediately.

Next steps: planning commission to create mapping and county staff to send a letter to Monroe County if that county indicates interest; any formal boundary change would require intergovernmental and legislative approvals not taken at this meeting.
