The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners learned on July 9 that this year’s snowmobile races at the county fairgrounds will not take place after the Friends of the Fair told the longtime coordinator it would be charged $2,500 to use the facility.
Commissioner Mr. Lorenson asked the board about the status of the races. Chairman Dan Siirila said the Friends of the Fair had moved to charge coordinator Greg Basom $2,500 for facility use; in prior years, Siirila said, the county provided use of the facility to Basom so long as he provided insurance and paid utilities. Faced with the new charge, Basom decided not to hold the event this year.
The board voted unanimously to send Basom a letter thanking him for the years he hosted the races. The motion to send the letter was moved by Mr. Lorenson, supported by Mr. Wood, and carried by unanimous voice vote.
No further actions or replacements for the event were discussed during the meeting.
