Gogebic County board authorizes settlement in Erickson v. Voit and adopts resolution opposing MDHHS procurement plan

The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on June 11 authorized county counsel to proceed with a settlement in the lawsuit Erickson v. Voit and adopted a resolution opposing a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services plan to competitively procure Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans.
Chairman Dan Siirila called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. at the County Courthouse in Bessemer. During Other Matters, Commissioner Lorenson moved to authorize counsel to move forward with the settlement agreement in Erickson v. Voit (Case No. 2:22-cv-00067). Commissioner Peterson supported the motion. The board approved the settlement authorization in a roll-call vote: Yes (7) — Lorenson, Matonich, Yon, Peterson, Cayer, Wood, Siirila; No (0).
In a separate action, Commissioner Yon moved, with support from Commissioner Cayer, to adopt a resolution opposing the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' plan to implement a competitive procurement for Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans. That motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
Commissioner Lorenson raised a question about a recent Globe article and explained that prior funds had been placed into contingency and were not misappropriated; he said Commissioner Yon will bring the explanatory information to the Friends of the Fair. The county administrator reported that ongoing medical examiner issues are progressing and that training for prospective medical examiners has been scheduled. In public comment, Ms. Linda Nelson said plans for the 2025 Gogebic County Fair are going well and that raffle tickets are being sold for $100 each.
The board approved the May 28, 2025 meeting minutes (motion by Commissioner Wood, supported by Commissioner Cayer) and approved the meeting agenda with the addition of two items to Other Matters (motion by Commissioner Peterson, supported by Commissioner Yon). The meeting adjourned at 5:07 p.m.
