Gogebic County commissioners receive clean FY2024 audit, approve $7,000 server-room HVAC replacement and authorize veterans grant application

The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on May 14 in Bessemer received a clean fiscal year 2024 audit, authorized a FY2026 County Veterans Service Fund grant submission, approved a $7,000 quote to replace a server-room HVAC unit and directed staff to send a letter to the City of Ironwood about downtown handicap parking.
Richard Neihardt of Gabridge & Company summarized the county's 117-page audit and reported the firm issued a clean opinion, concluding the county's financial statements were accurate and timely and that there were no audit findings. Commissioner Matonich moved to receive the audit and place it on file; Commissioner Wood supported the motion, which carried by unanimous voice vote.
In communications, John Frello, the county's Veterans Service Officer, asked the board to authorize the signatures needed for a FY2026 County Veterans Service Fund grant application and presented the Gogebic County Council of Veterans Annual Report for 2024. Commissioner Lorenson moved to authorize the appropriate signatures and to receive and place the annual report on file; Commissioner Matonich supported the motion, and it passed by unanimous voice vote.
Under Other Matters, Commissioner Yon moved and Commissioner Wood supported approval of a quote from Efficiency Kings to replace the mini-split unit in the county server room for $7,000. The board took a roll-call vote: yes — Commissioners Cayer, Wood, Lorenson, Matonich, Yon and Siirila; no — none; absent — Commissioner Peterson. The motion carried.
The county administrator reported that the ARPA report has been filed and accepted by the state. Commissioner Wood raised complaints the board had received about a lack of handicap parking in downtown Ironwood; Commissioner Lorenson suggested sending a letter to the City of Ironwood. Commissioner Wood moved, Commissioner Lorenson supported, and the board approved sending the letter by unanimous voice vote.
During the public-comment portion, members of the public raised concerns about the Michigan Institute of Forensic Science & Medicine (MIFSM), describing difficulties local funeral directors have encountered with the current medical examiner. The comments were recorded but no board action followed.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:31 p.m. following a motion by Commissioner Matonich supported by Commissioner Wood.
