Resident, volunteers push Gogebic County to update 30-year-old animal-control ordinance

At the March 26 meeting resident Sandy Lahtinen asked the Board of Commissioners to update Gogebic County’s Animal Enforcement Ordinance, which she said is more than 30 years old and does not adequately address stray cats, neglect and animal cruelty.
Lahtinen asked commissioners to consider a revised ordinance that explicitly covers stray cats and strengthens neglect and cruelty provisions. Connie Davey volunteered to research what other counties are doing and to help coordinate an update. Commissioner Dan Siirila acknowledged that bringing all county entities together to create a cohesive ordinance would be a complicated task, and Commissioner Lorenson agreed the ordinance needs revision.
Public commenters later reiterated offers to help and provided contact information to county officials. The minutes record that staff or commissioners did not provide a timeline or specific next procedural steps for drafting or adopting a revised ordinance during the meeting.
