Gogebic County commissioners approve mental health appointments, fairgrounds contract and tentative union pact

What the board approved: By unanimous voice vote, commissioners appointed Jeri Ekman, Susan Roberts, William Malloy and Grady O'Neill to the Community Mental Health Board. The board accepted a proposal from Angelo Lupino for $88,780 to build a lean-to on the fairgrounds’ multi-purpose building; that motion passed by roll call vote, 7–0. Commissioners also approved a tentative contract with AFSCME covering courthouse employees; the contract was recorded as approved by roll call vote, 7–0. Minutes do not include contract terms.
Other actions and communications: The board received and placed on file a Non-Gaming Land Acquisition Application and authorized the chairman to appoint a Snowbelt Transit Commission representative; commissioners also voted to write a letter of support for Ironwood Township’s DNR Trust Fund Grant application to update Sunset Road Athletic Park.
Public comment and next steps: Residents raised questions during public comment about tax-revenue impacts of a land-acquisition matter and about timing for Friends of the Fair planning. Commissioners discussed the idea of the Friends of the Fair taking over event planning while county ownership and insurance remain with the county; the board took no formal action on that proposal. The meeting adjourned at 6:01 p.m.
