Larry Grimsby requested that Gogebic County consider taking ownership of the Black River Dam and described local interest in restoring the structure. Grimsby said Erwin Township could help with maintenance and some financial support.
Commissioner Lorenson noted that when the dam failed in summer 2024 the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issued a citation to the Department of Natural Resources, and he said EGLE and DNR were scheduled to meet Feb. 18, 2025. The board voted to write a letter of support to the DNR (motion Mr. Lorenson, support Mr. Matonich); the motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
The minutes record the board’s support motion and the suggestion that Erwin Township could assist with maintenance; they do not record the letter’s text, a timetable for county takeover, nor any budget commitment by the county.
