Recovery coach tells commissioners her jail program has served 29 people since 2022

At the Jan. 14 meeting, Carolyn Christoferson of Firm Foundations updated the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on a recovery-coach program she has run at the county jail since 2022.
Christoferson described the program as focused on reducing relapse and helping individuals re-enter the community. She said roughly half of the current jail population attend a weekly substance-abuse group she maintains, and that she conducts one-on-one meetings with individuals who meet program criteria and are interested in recovery resources. She also said she works closely with the Drug Court and Mental Health Court to identify candidates for those programs.
Christoferson told the board she has served 29 individuals since 2022 and is aware of at least four people who have been released, recovered and are now positively contributing to the community. The board received the update as an appearance on the agenda with no formal action recorded.
