Commissioner Justin Knepper moved the change, which Commissioner Scott Shackleton supported. The approved rates are $15.50 per hour starting pay; $17.00 per hour after one year if the deputy is judged proficient and authorized by the sheriff or the sheriff’s designee; and $18.00 per hour for deputies certified and in good standing with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). The committee recorded that the estimated annual impact on the general fund is less than $20,000 because many part‑time wages are reimbursable through grants and service agreements.
Committee members discussed recruitment and retention challenges for part‑time deputies and the separate classification for 79‑hour corrections positions. The motion directs implementation at the beginning of the next pay period. The motion carried on a voice vote.
The meeting packet noted no action was taken on corrections‑class positions, which remain under their separate classification.
