Commissioners discuss new COA facility driveway, reinforcement and local Meals on Wheels delivery

Commissioners at the Jan. 27 meeting discussed final details of the new Commission on Aging (COA) facility, including MDOT-required changes to the driveway location, the resulting unbudgeted costs and construction details intended to support future transit use.
Chair David Jackson said staff are working with the Michigan Department of Transportation on the driveway location for the COA site and that plan changes will create unbudgeted costs; he said who will pay those costs is under discussion. Commissioner Bob Teunessen noted that Frederick Construction Management Group identified potential issues and added reinforcement beneath the concrete so the driveway will support the weight of Transit buses and other large vehicles. Teunessen also reported Harvest Pointe will begin delivering Meals on Wheels with locally prepared meals rather than meals prepackaged out of county.
Commissioners discussed possible options for completing the driveway work, including asking the County Road Commission to perform the work. The board has not taken a formal funding vote on the driveway changes; discussions are ongoing and will be revisited as design and funding details are finalized.
