Ontonagon County commissioners approve hires, budgets and support letters at March meeting

At its March 18 meeting the Ontonagon County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved hiring a park manager, accepted a resignation and approved budget and grant items, including a $63,000 MMP work program advance and letters of support for planned local health and assisted-living facilities.
The Ontonagon County Board of Commissioners on March 18, 2025 approved a series of routine personnel and budget actions and issued letters supporting local health-care and assisted-living projects.
At the meeting in the Circuit courtroom, Chair Carl Nykanen and the board voted 4-0 (Commissioner Cane absent) to hire John Wilmes as county park manager on a contractual basis for the 2025 season, following a motion by Commissioner Bourdeau supported by Commissioner Store. The board also formally accepted the resignation of airport maintenance employee David Aho and authorized advertising to fill that airport maintenance position.
The board approved the MMP work program budget as an advance of $63,000 to be reimbursed. It approved a travel request for Floyd Rowley to attend the annual spring conference at a reimbursable cost of $1,657.35 to be covered by the MVAA grant, and it approved a $2,271.35 reduction to the veteran's grant fund.
Commissioners approved two letters of support to Ontonagon Township: one for an emergency health-care facility and one for an assisted-living facility in Ontonagon County. Norman Pestka used the public-comment period to thank the board for the letters; Dan Pestka had earlier spoken in favor of pursuing a critical care facility for the county.
The board released OCAP's $10,000 appropriation for January through March 2025 and approved payment of current bills totaling $46,200.17, prepaid bills totaling $225,784.22 and payroll totaling $192,491.44; fund-by-fund line items were announced in the record.
The meeting concluded with no committee reports or additional agenda requests and adjourned at 4:18 p.m.
