Ontonagon County approves $45,776.67 ARPA-funded budget amendment for jail windows

The Ontonagon County Board of Commissioners voted Sept. 4 to approve a budget amendment that uses $45,776.67 in ARPA/COVID-CARES funds to complete a jail window payment. By motion of Commissioner Nousiainen, supported by Commissioner Store, the board carried the amendment on a 5-0 roll call vote.
The amendment, recorded as ONTONAGON COUNTY BUDGET NO. 2025-13, increases the COVID/CARES line (101 000-528.000) and the Jail Renovations line (101 351-975.000) by $45,776.67. The paperwork attached to the amendment states the funds were obligated as of Dec. 31, 2024, and that the change authorizes final payment for the jail windows. The request was submitted by Stacy C. Preiss, County Clerk and chief administrative officer.
Commission business at the Sept. 4 special session was brief: the board opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, approved the meeting agenda, heard no public comment and then took the budget amendment vote. Commissioners present for the vote were Commissioner Cane, Commissioner Bourdeau, Commissioner Nousiainen, Commissioner Store and Chair Carl Nykanen.
The board also approved other procedural items at the Sept. 4 meeting, including travel for the county clerk and scheduling the public budget hearing for Sept. 16. The special meeting adjourned to the call of the chair at 1:50 p.m.
The budget amendment text and justification remain part of the county record; the county clerk’s amendment form lists the date of the request as Aug. 8, 2025. No public comment was recorded on the amendment at the meeting.
