Ontonagon County appoints board members, approves $85,069 remonumentation grant

The Ontonagon County Board of Commissioners voted Dec. 16 to fill several authority and board vacancies and to approve a 2026 Remonumentation grant.
The board appointed Charles Pantti to the Economic Development Corporation board for a six-year term ending Dec. 31, 2031. By a 4-1 vote — with Store recorded as abstaining — the board appointed Marlene Broemer to the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) board for a two-year term ending Dec. 31, 2027. The minutes record the appointment motions as moved by Cane and supported by Store.
The board also appointed members to the Brownfield Authority — Jerald Wuornema (four-year term), Mike Rebholz (partial term through Dec. 31, 2026) and James Ojala (partial term through Dec. 31, 2027) — and appointed Mike Rebholz to a partial three-year term on the Land Bank Authority through Dec. 31, 2028.
The board approved the 2026 Remonumentation grant in the amount of $85,069.00 by motion of Cane, supported by Store; the motion carried on a 5-0 roll call vote. The minutes record that the board approved other regular payments and prepaid bills at the Dec. 16 meeting with detailed fund-by-fund totals.
Public comment at the session included remarks by Stacy Canada, business development at Sunset Harbor, and Terri Saari, RN, who urged improved health care access in Ontonagon County and described an initiative called Bridging the Gap aimed at addressing local health needs.
