Oceana County reappoints two to Parks and Recreation Commission; grant and park planning updates

The Oceana County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 18 approved Motion 2025-143 to reappoint Jeff Hiddema and Erik Bengston to the Parks and Recreation Commission for three‑year terms ending Dec. 31, 2028. The motion was moved by Commissioner Paul Erickson, supported by Commissioner Craig Hardy and carried by voice vote.
Parks and Recreation Chair Garry McKeen reported the county parks are in good condition and circulated a flyer highlighting Marshville Dam County Park. McKeen said the Parks Commission applied for a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) grant through the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission for a multi‑county project focused on Gale’s Pond reed and cattail removal. The grant application would split funding among five counties.
McKeen also said a committee formed by the Parks and Recreation Board was unable to reach a conclusion about Black Lake Park’s future and will meet again on Jan. 18, 2026. McKeen noted staff needs for seasonal park maintenance and that some applicants for the county Maintenance Supervisor position may be interested in seasonal work.
The reappointments and park reports were uncontested. No public comment was offered on the item.
