Oceana County delays DHHS board appointment to Oct. 23, asks for wider notice

The Oceana County Board and its Finance & Administration Committee agreed Oct. 9 to postpone filling a county-appointed seat on the Department of Health and Human Services board until the Oct. 23 meeting so the opening can be more widely publicized.
At the Finance and Administration Committee meeting, Benona Township resident Randy Neuman introduced himself as a candidate for the appointment. Committee members discussed selection procedures and concurred that providing additional notice and holding interviews at the Oct. 23 meeting would let more residents learn of the opening. Commissioner Paul Erickson offered to publish the notice in The Oceana Echo.
Outgoing DHHS board member Al Doctor, who is not seeking reappointment after 10 years of service, addressed the Board during public comment and thanked commissioners for the opportunity to serve. Administrator Tracy Byard summarized the timeline: the vacancy will be publicly posted, interviews will be scheduled for Oct. 23, and the Board expects to make the appointment that day.
The decision to delay was procedural; no formal motion number was recorded in the minutes for the postponement. The committee also noted that, to date, three letters of interest have been received. The Board did not adopt additional eligibility criteria at the Oct. 9 meeting.
