Oceana Conservation District asks county for higher annual funding and more Clean Sweep support

Laura Ackerman, District Manager of the Oceana Conservation District, presented the district's annual report and budget request to the Finance & Administration Committee on Sept. 11. Ackerman asked the county to increase general conservation funding from $14,000 to $20,000 and to raise support for the Household Hazardous Waste/Clean Sweep program from $6,000 to $8,000, noting the Transfer Station no longer accepts oil and that some district programs are not state- or federally funded.
Mary Sheppard, a board member and program recipient, described the Knee-High Naturalist program and emphasized the district's educational outreach to children. Committee members thanked the presenters; Commissioner Joel McCormick and Commissioner Paul Erickson commended the Conservation District’s work and asked for continued support.
Ackerman said the Conservation District relies on local backing to deliver services including household hazardous waste collection and scrap tire collection, which lack state or federal funding. The district anticipates increased oil collection at future clean sweep events due to changes at the Transfer Station.
No formal committee vote on the funding request was recorded in the minutes; the request was presented for consideration as part of upcoming budget planning work scheduled for Sept. 23 and later budget compilation.
