Commissioners approve INDOT bridge‑safety grant application; Bridge 21 closed for six‑week superstructure work

Dubois County Commissioners on Nov. 3 authorized Highway Engineer Levi Leffert to submit an application to INDOT’s Bridge Safety Improvement funding notice (open Nov. 3–Dec. 5, 2025) that could fund safety improvements to roughly 50–60 county bridges under the 90/10 match program.
Leffert said he instructed Lochmueller to prepare the application and the County signed a Letter of Financial Commitment. A motion to submit the application was made, duly seconded and carried.
Separately, Leffert said Bridge 21 on CR 200 W (over Little Creek, 0.6 miles north of CR 600 N) closed beginning Nov. 3 for replacement of its 60‑year‑old superstructure with new steel beams, a concrete deck and scour protection. The bridge will be raised about 10 inches, which requires raising the roadway approaches; Leffert estimated the work will take six weeks and that there will be no through traffic during construction.
Leffert also reported a Phase I inspection reclassified Small Structure #72 on Portersville Road as a bridge and that Bridge 116 (CR 820 E) will have its superstructure replaced with steel beams and a concrete deck beginning in December. For Bridge 78 (a 222‑foot, three‑span structure over the Patoka River), Leffert said design plans should be complete by the end of November, a letting is anticipated in December or January, and he requested approval to ask the County Council for an additional $650,000 in Cumulative Bridge funds for rehabilitation; commissioners agreed to move forward with that request.
No contractor was selected at the Nov. 3 meeting; Leffert said the Bridge 78 project is expected to be awarded in January or February 2026 with construction in spring/summer 2026.
