Dubois County highway staff outline paving and bridge work; public concerns raised about AES solar farm batteries

County Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken and County Highway Engineer Levi Leffert updated the Board of Commissioners Oct. 20 on ongoing and planned road and bridge work and on public concerns about a proposed AES solar park.
Leffert said Calcar completed paving on Schnellville Road and the department will install white edge markings soon; Old Petersburg Road, CR 490 W, 580 N, and Dubois–Cuzco Road are scheduled for paving in the next month. He told the board the Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) application for call 2026-01 has been submitted and INDOT is expected to announce awards in December.
Leffert reported Bridge 29 (400 E) deck and beam replacement is complete and the bridge reopened Oct. 10; chip seal over added stone is planned next spring. He previewed upcoming replacements for Bridge 21 (CR 200 W) and Bridge 116 (CR 820 E) and said roadway closures are expected when work begins. Because the Cum Bridge Highway Reimbursement/Contracted Services line has a low balance, Leffert requested an additional appropriation of $25,000 to be forwarded to County Council.
On the planned AES solar park west of US 231 and east of SR 161, Leffert said he has received public comments and questions about the project and that AES proposes a battery energy storage system. He said a stakeholder meeting will be held in November to answer project questions and that he is collecting information from AES and the public.
