Dubois County commissioners deadlock on proposed county administrator position

The Dubois County Commissioners on Oct. 6 considered adding a County Administrator position to the draft 2026 budget but the measure failed after a tie vote and an abstention.
Clerk Amy Kippenbrock told the board she and other officeholders and employees were concerned the position had not been properly discussed with department heads and that the proposed wage did not align with existing pay ranges. Kippenbrock said some staff believe the role had not been adequately vetted.
Commissioner Serice Stenftenagel defended the proposal, saying a small committee drafted the job description to provide dedicated oversight of significant county projects and assets. Stenftenagel moved to create the position; Commissioner Nick Hostetter seconded.
Commissioner Chad A. Blessinger told the board he would abstain from voting because he is considering applying for the position himself. With Stenftenagel voting yes, Hostetter voting no and Blessinger abstaining, the motion resulted in a 1–1–1 split and failed for lack of a majority.
The board did not adopt the position at the meeting. No formal amendment or new timeline for reconsideration was set; the matter may return in future budget discussions.
