County engineers brief commissioners on paving, bridges and potential road closures tied to solar project and sidewalk plans

Highway Engineer Levi Leffert updated the Dubois County commissioners on multiple transportation projects at the Aug. 18 meeting and flagged upcoming public input on a potential roadway closure tied to a state-led sidewalk project.
Leffert said paving on Old Road 45, 600 N, 400 S and 50 E is complete and that Calcar plans to pave 400 W and 1200 S this week. He asked the board to accept two change orders (25-06: $1,093.05 decrease; 25-07: $1,887.22 decrease), which the board approved unanimously.
The Club Road box culvert project is complete and open to traffic; asphalt will be placed later this fall after settlement, Leffert said. He added the Hickory Grove Road bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on Aug. 22, 2025.
On planned projects that could affect local travel, Leffert said INDOT has asked whether the county would be open to permanently closing a section of CR 250 between Grant Street and SR 56 in Ireland because the intersection is skewed and poses safety concerns related to a proposed SR 56 sidewalk project. Leffert said the county will solicit public input on the possible closure via its Facebook page.
Leffert also said he will meet Aug. 19 with the Crossvine Solar team to discuss road-use agreements and expectations related to construction traffic; commissioners were invited to attend the meeting.
Leffert noted the 15th Street Extension project in the City of Jasper requires a Conditional Letter of Map Revision because of a floodway surcharge and asked the board to sign an "Overview & Concurrence Form" requested by the project consultant; the board authorized signing the form.
Finally, residents have raised concerns about the proposed roundabout at SR 162/SR 64; Leffert said he will meet with INDOT to discuss minimizing traffic impacts and safety during the delayed redesign and construction.
The board voiced consensus to proceed on the stop-sign placement for North Ridge Estates (an intersection partly in county jurisdiction) and to amend the county ordinance accordingly for that traffic control.
