Dubois County commissioners approve highway change order, road closure and surplus declarations

The Dubois County Commissioners on July 21 approved a series of highway and procurement actions, including a small contract change order, a road closure for an Aug. 16 community event and a personnel hire.
Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken told the board the two-axle dump trucks have arrived but the truck beds remain delayed; one bed is expected in about six weeks and the other in about ten, and the vendor arrangement yields a $2,500 price decrease with no shipping charge. Lueken also reported that chip-seal paving projects for 2025 are complete and that 650 South may be prepped as part of 2026 work if time permits. "The two axle trucks came in last week; however, the beds keep getting delayed," Lueken said.
The board approved a change order for the Woodland Hills Subdivision (2025-02) that increased the wedge-and-level line by $23.18, decreased the surface line by $92.48 and produced a net decrease of $69.30. The motion to approve the change order was seconded and carried unanimously.
Also approved by motion, carried unanimously, was a request from the St. Anthony Fire Department to close two side streets for its annual street fest and car show on Aug. 16, 2025, if needed. The board approved hiring a District 2 highway driver to replace an employee who left in June; the new hire will start Aug. 4, 2025. Lueken said he is still looking for a location in Holland for a recycling/trash site and discussed options including purchasing property.
Auditor Sandra L. Morton presented a list of county computers, laptops, a Kenwood VHF radio and other items to declare surplus. The commissioners voted unanimously to declare the listed items surplus and directed that county cell phones be factory reset and donated to Crisis Connection where feasible; phones that cannot be reset will be destroyed and recycled.
