Commissioners record 2026 requests from Solid Waste, 4‑H, SIRS, Habig and others

Dubois County commissioners on June 16 heard a series of 2026 funding requests from county programs and nonprofit partners and recorded consensus to include the requests in the commissioners’ budget for submission to the County Council.
Solid Waste Management Director Carla Striegel‑Winner requested a $283,000 appropriation for the district’s 2026 budget; the board approved a motion to include the request pending County Council approval. Representatives of the 4‑H Council (Scott Schnell, Ed Boeglin, Heath Weyer and Ryder Wehr) requested a $145,000 annual allocation and updated the board on building repairs supported by donations and grants; their request will be included in the 2026 budget pending County Council approval.
Cheryl Mullis and Melissa Sharp of SIRS presented the organization’s 2024 annual report and requested $40,000 for 2026 (the same amount requested for 2025). SIRS reported serving 317 residents, delivering 45,369 service hours and providing 5,965 one‑way trips; the board recorded consensus to include the $40,000 request pending County Council review.
Carie Dick and Park Director Tom Moorman requested an increase in county funding for the Habig Community Center Older Americans program from $20,000 to $25,000; the minutes note the request will be included in the commissioners’ budget as $22,000 pending County Council approval. The Soil & Water Conservation District, represented by Chair Brenda Sermersheim and Administrative Assistant Kaylee Jacob, also presented its budget and received consensus to include the request pending County Council approval.
The board deferred final 2026 budget preparations because of meeting length. County Council final appropriation and any adjustments will be set through the County Council process.
