Commissioners rescind removal order after owner presents demolition contract for 5390 Main St., Dubois

County health officials told Dubois County Commissioners on May 5 that a dilapidated building at 5390 Main Street in Dubois posed safety concerns and had been the subject of earlier discussion. Health Administrator Shawn Werner and Environmental Health Specialist Christina Pierini reported contractor contact attempts and said bricks had been moved from the roadway.
County staff recommended developing removal specifications, soliciting bids, and issuing an order for the county to remove the unsafe portion and assess a $1,200 fine due within 15 days. The board voted to issue the order and fine, and the fine was to be deposited into the Unsafe Building Fund.
Shortly after the order, property owner Rob Slotten arrived at the meeting and presented a signed contract with a contractor to demolish the unsafe portion. Slotten told the board the work would begin no later than May 25, 2025 and be completed by June 15, 2025. Commissioners then voted to rescind the county removal order, allow Slotten to proceed under his contract, and postpone enforcement of the fine until after work is completed. Slotten is scheduled to return to the June 16, 2025 meeting at 9:00 a.m. for follow up.
County Attorney Gregory S. Schnarr will send a letter to Slotten explaining the findings recorded at the meeting. The board’s actions moved the matter from a county‑planned removal and fine to a monitored owner‑contracted resolution with a follow‑up review date.
