Chassell residents press Houghton County on recurring culvert flooding

Residents from Chassell raised repeated infrastructure concerns during the Houghton County Board of Commissioners’ July 8 public-comment period, urging county follow-up on culverts and localized flooding.
Lynn Artman, Mary Jean Daavettila and Robert Daavettila described issues with culverts on Lakeshore Drive that the Road Commission maintains. Mary Jean Daavettila said one culvert was replaced in 1982; Robert Daavettila said there has been flooding six times and recommended contacting the Drain Commission, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and MDOT. Chairman Tom Tikkanen said Chris VanArsdale will follow up with Chassell residents.
Charlotte Fields also addressed the board to say there is garbage in the water. Separately, Roy Manninen (joining by Microsoft Teams) voiced opposition to the Elderly Nutrition millage. Ben Larson asked Clerk Jennifer Kelly which millages will appear on the Aug. 5 ballot; Clerk Kelly listed Canal View, CCISD, Elderly Nutrition, Jail/Sheriff and a Baraga Schools precinct question for some Portage Township voters.
Why this matters: repeated flooding and infrastructure complaints can indicate localized hazards and maintenance needs that cross county, township and state responsibilities; residents requested the board coordinate follow-up with relevant agencies.
What’s next: Chairman Tikkanen said Chris VanArsdale will follow up with residents in Chassell to pursue contacts with the relevant agencies.
