Houghton County adopts $23.3 million 2025–26 budget

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 9 adopted Resolution #2025-024, the General Appropriations Act for fiscal year Oct. 1, 2025–Sept. 30, 2026. Administrator Rheault presented the budget figures included in the board packet: total revenues of $23,387,661.26 and appropriations of $23,318,902.03, leaving an indicated net surplus of $68,759.23.
The resolution formalizes adoption of the county’s general fund, special revenue and proprietary fund budgets and contains implementation language: appropriations limit county spending to the fiscal year; the board may amend budgets provided they remain balanced; the county administrator is authorized to make budget transfers up to 10% of departmental expenditures under board policy; and recipients of county appropriations must accept audit access provisions. The board approved the resolution on a roll-call vote: Britz, Janssen, Tikkanen and Keranen voted yes; Anderson was recorded absent.
Administrator Rheault also noted ongoing administrative work to incorporate authorized wage and fringe benefit changes for county employees as authorized by the board. The resolution was certified by County Clerk Jennifer Kelly and will take effect for the October 1 fiscal year start.
