Houghton County to raise notary fee to $7 Oct. 1 and $10 next April; home-birth and copy fees set

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 23 approved a schedule of higher clerk office fees proposed by County Clerk Jennifer Kelly, including stepped increases to notarization charges and set fees for recorded home births and photocopies.
Kelly told the board that notary service costs have increased and recommended raising fees from $5 per notarization to $7 per document effective Oct. 1, 2025, and to $10 per document effective April 1, 2026. She also proposed charging $50 to record home births in the County Clerk’s Office and $1.00 per page for photocopying; the board approved the package by voice vote (YES: Keranen, Anderson, Tikkanen, Britz — 4; NO: None). Commissioner Gretchen Janssen on Microsoft Teams did not cast a vote.
Commissioner Roy Britz raised a concern about how the clerk's fee changes would align with fees the Sheriff's Department charges; Clerk Kelly said she would speak with Sheriff Saaranen to coordinate fees.
The approved fee schedule takes effect on the dates Kelly proposed; the motion was made by Commissioner Joel Keranen and seconded by Commissioner Glenn Anderson.
