Houghton County hears $22,799.22 transfer-station repair estimate, considers expansion and agenda item for parcel

On Nov. 3, 2025 the Houghton County Board of Commissioners discussed a $22,799.22 repair estimate from Bekkala’s Diesel Repair, LLC for a Transfer Station vehicle and the prospect of a budget amendment to cover the shortfall. Commissioner Joel Keranen presented an email from Curt Judson and the estimate; Administrator Rheault said the expense was not budgeted but that the Transfer Station budget can absorb the loss and would require a formal budget amendment.
Chairman Tom Tikkanen said the county should investigate the cost of a slightly used replacement vehicle — noting the last new vehicle was purchased in 2023 — and suggested the county may need to consider a future expansion of Transfer Station operations. Faith Morrison asked for a printout showing the budget loss. The board agreed to put the Transfer Station parcel on the next meeting agenda for further discussion and direction to staff.
