Grant County commissioners approve bills, permits and interim sheriff appointment

The Grant County Board of Commissioners carried several administrative measures on Aug. 21, approving routine bills and vendor payments, a utility permit and the interim appointment of the county’s chief deputy as sheriff until an elected successor takes office.
Commissioner Marty Meyer moved to approve $53,300.47 in bills, and commissioners Al Roy Hochhalter and Alton Zenker joined Meyer in a unanimous roll-call vote to approve the expenditures. Vendor payments recorded in the meeting minutes included a $24,365.42 payment to Sauber Engineering Inc., $4,977.27 to the North Dakota Department of Transportation and smaller payments to local suppliers.
The board also approved a motion to pay for a duplicate title requested by Natasha Steinmetz after she said she had trouble obtaining the duplicate from the County Auditor; the board voted to cover the $5 fee. Jackie Steinmetz presented utility permit UTL 1-36/161-134/87-89-B for WRT; Commissioner Meyer moved to approve the permit and the board approved it by roll call.
Public works items included motions to pay Galen Meier for 83 yards of rock at $10.00 per yard and to pay Jack Paris for 342 yards of dirt at $4.00 per yard; both motions passed unanimously. Jonathan (Jonathan/“Jon”) Alt raised road-condition concerns and the board agreed to add a notation to ditch-cutting notices instructing contractors not to leave cut material on the roadway.
Commissioner Al Roy Hochhalter moved to appoint Chief Deputy Dillon to the Grant County Sheriff until an elected successor fills the office. The motion included an annual salary set to $67,000, an approved 3% salary increase scheduled for 2025 and occupancy of county rental property at no charge; the board approved the appointment by a 3-0 roll-call vote.
The meeting concluded with scheduling announcements and adjournment at 12:33 p.m. The courthouse will be closed Sept. 2 for Labor Day and the Grant County 2025 budget hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11 at 9:00 a.m. MT in the courthouse courtroom.
