Commissioners hear complaints about slow building-permit process; staff to cooperate on fixes

Several residents and county staff told the Grant County Board on Aug. 7 that the county’s building-permit process has been creating delays and confusion for applicants.
Shannon Wangsvick and LeeAnn Hoherz told the commissioners they and other permittees have been waiting for building-permit approvals and find the process unclear. Jackie Steinmetz, Patrick Diehl and Wangsvick agreed to work together to improve the process; Commissioner Marty Meyer recommended temporarily easing late fees until the permitting workflow is streamlined.
Patrick Diehl presented a recent safety audit and recommended installing barriers around propane tanks to address identified hazards. Diehl also reported attending floodplain-management training and provided several drafts of a proposed Zoning and Floodplain Management agreement for the county to consider with organized townships.
Steinmetz also presented a letter proposing test holes for coal exploration and requested action on a permit for West River; the board said it will review that permit request pending the outcome of the Planning and Zoning Board’s review.
No formal permitting actions or approvals were recorded at the Aug. 7 meeting; commissioners recorded the presentations and directed staff and stakeholders to collaborate on procedural fixes.
