Grant County commissioners approve $31,323.15 in bills, multiple abatements, property sales and evictions

At their June 5 meeting, the Grant County Board of Commissioners approved $31,323.15 in bills, several homestead and veteran abatements, ordered a 6-by-70-foot culvert for Township 136N R87W, authorized eviction notices, approved multiple county property sales to local municipalities, and accepted a bid to replace courthouse heating valves.
Chairman Alton Zenker called the Grant County Board of Commissioners to order at 9:00 a.m. on June 5, 2024, and Commissioner Marty Meyer moved to approve the meeting agenda and the May 15 minutes; both motions were seconded by Zenker and approved by the two commissioners present.
The board approved county bills totaling $31,323.15, with payments to vendors including Election Systems & Software Inc. ($5,140.76), Cerberus Security ($4,845.00) and Eide Dodge ($3,127.73). Commissioner Meyer made the motion to approve the bills; Chairman Zenker seconded. The roll call votes recorded Meyer—aye and Zenker—aye; Commissioner Al Roy Hochhalter was absent.
The commissioners approved a series of property tax abatements for 2022 and 2023, covering homestead and veterans credits for specified parcel numbers. Each abatement motion was made by Meyer, seconded by Zenker, and carried by roll call votes recorded as aye for both commissioners present.
The board ordered a 6-foot-by-70-foot culvert to be installed between sections 16 and 21 in Township 136 North, Range 87 West. The motion to purchase the culvert was made by Meyer and seconded by Zenker and carried by roll call vote.
Residents John and Carol Degenstein met with the board to raise dust-suppression concerns for about 2,000 yards of road between the Schatz Subdivisions. According to the minutes, Mr. Degenstein said the homeowners' association would investigate the availability and cost of spraying; no formal county funding or plan was approved during the meeting.
The board approved a Special Event application from Gunny's Bar and Off-Sale for a fishing tournament scheduled June 7–8, 2024; Spartan Security was listed as the security provider. Commissioners also authorized the service of Notices of Intention to Evict for five parcels and approved several county property sales: Lot 2 Block 2 in the townsite of Lark (parcel 21411701) for $200 and multiple parcels to the cities of Carson, New Leipzig and Elgin for $5 each.
County business also included approval of a $575 payment to Millenium Express and acceptance of a bid from H. A. Thompson to replace valves in the courthouse heating system. The heating-valve motion was made by Meyer, seconded by Zenker, and carried by roll call vote.
Chairman Zenker adjourned the meeting at 12:02 p.m. The board noted upcoming meetings on July 3 and July 17, 2024, and that the courthouse will be closed July 4 and July 5 in observation of Independence Day and Juneteenth.
